The Penn State Engineering Leadership Development Minor (ELDM) is a pioneering globally recognized program.
Penn State and Moroccan students collaborate on international engineering project
Eighteen Penn State students and thirteen Moroccan students from École Mohammadia d’Ingénieurs came together in spring 2009 to form “Team Amerocco,” an international group of students with a passion for cultural exchanges and a drive to improve the world though engineering.
Very few college students have the opportunity to lead thousands of people in a multi-million dollar fundraising effort. Caitlin Zankowski is one of the few.
Penn State engineering students and faculty visited Morocco in summer 2010 to put in place three different engineering design projects. Two of the teams devised systems to improve communities’ water quality, and the third group offered a solution for better workplace seating at a women’s cooperative.
The Engineering Leadership Development Program was featured as a cover story for this issue on “Global Outreach.”

Graduate student spotlight: Dave Vargas
Dave Vargas, an August 2009 graduate of the civil and environmental engineering master’s program, is in a leadership category all his own.
In preparation to launch its new $20 million Bernard M. Gordon-Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineering Leadership Program (ELP), MIT released a white paper reviewing the engineering leadership programs from around the world to identify examples of global good practice. Information was collected during interviews with international experts in engineering education and directors of established engineering leadership programs; more than seventy individuals were consulted and more than forty programs were investigated.
